Gesho is (loosely) a series of artworks with use in daily life. Primarily mended, restored and hand-illustrated clothing. Experiments with lamps, upholstery, quilting and other housewears also fit under the Gesho umbrella. The name references Tej, a honey wine commonly brewed at home throughout Ethiopia. I tried Tej in Amsterdam and began brewing my own on my return to Queens. The only ingredients are water, honey, and Gesho, a bitter bark which gives the wine it’s distinct flavour. In traditional home brews, the yeast which ferments the wine lives naturally on the Gesho bark and leaves. The name to me is a microcosm of a philosophy I aim to foster, of working directly with the materials at hand while remaining attentive to new techniques and receptive to new influences. I began the project in Ridgewood, Queens and continue it from my current home in Berlin, Germany.
